MicroMentor connects volunteer business professionals with emerging entrepreneurs in mentoring relationships. MicroMentor's mission is to help traditionally underserved entrepreneurs -- women, minorities, recent immigrants, the poor, and the disabled -- navigate the opportunities and challenges of growing a business.

How MicroMentor Works

1. Participants start by completing our online application form. Here mentors describe their experience and expertise, and entrepreneurs outline their business needs and mentoring goals.

2. Members always control who they connect with – actively seeking out connections, or reviewing and approving direct requests from others in our network.

3. Once connected, relationships progress over email and telephone, lasting an average of three months.

4. MicroMentor’s dedicated customer service team offers support and resources at every step along the way.

Program Requirements

We ask that all participants treat others within the MicroMentor community with respect, put an honest effort into each mentoring relationship established, and review and agree to our Ethical Agreement and Terms of Use. We also require that mentor volunteers:

1. Have significant business experience and expertise, such as:
-
3 years of business ownership experience.
-
5 years of management experience.
-
Several years of professional experience in a specialized skill, for example: marketing, web site development, or accounting and financial planning.

2. Plan to dedicate 3 hours a month, for 3 months, to working with each protege (actual involvement may vary).

3. Be at least 21 years of age.

Why Do Our Mentors Voulnteer?

We are keenly interested in why our mentors volunteer their time to serve emerging entrepreneurs. Here are some responses to the question "Why are you interested in mentoring an entrepreneur?":

  • "I believe entrepreneurs strongly influence the health of our communities and towns. I have enjoyed excellent opportunities and I would like to create similar possibilities for others."

  • "I get satisfaction by helping others succeed and grow. I also like to learn, and teaching is the best way to learn!"

  • "I am interested in mentoring entrepreneurs because I am one myself, and I love helping people succeed with their business."

  • "My goal is to "give back" by helping others that are facing some of the same difficulties that I have faced as an entrepreneur. I want to repay the help given to me when I was getting started."

  • "I want to meet people who share a common interest with me (entrepreneurship).
