April 21st kicks off National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary things through service. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism. The week draws the support and endorsement of the President and Congress, governors, mayors and community leaders everywhere.
This is a great opportunity for us to reflect on the amazing deeds performed by volunteer mentors on the MicroMentor site. In 2012, over 600 volunteers provided almost 9,000 hours of mentoring to small business owners. Even though MicroMentor only requires a 9 hour time commitment, the average mentor on MicroMentor went above and beyond by dedicating an average of 14 hours per mentoring relationship. Even better, 14% of our mentors are still in contact with their mentees after one year.
- There are more than 4,200 active mentors on MicroMentor. Our mentors come from all walks of life and...
- Have an average of 7 years business ownership experience and 13 years management experience.
- Have backgrounds that span over 50 industries, but the most common industry backgrounds are in Business Consulting, Financial Services, Information Technology, Marketing, and Manufacturing.
- Come from every state in the union, but are most highly represented in the West Coast, Texas, New York, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois.
- Are 42 years old, on average.
It would be impossible to recognize every mentor here, but we want to highlight a few mentors that have received significant praise.
