Q. Possibilities of setting up an NGO by an alien i,e a person who is not a citizen of USA or holding any resident visa

I want to set up an NGO to fight unemployment in USA.(Pl read my Blog fightingunemployment.blogspot.com) I am holding a tourist VISA B2. and I am from India aged 60 years..

Mr. Sarkar, I dont think there are many oppertunities to start up organizations/register NGO's on a non-resident/non-work  visa. I think the terms of the visa prohibit any sort of activities which organize a organization under a tourist visa. Even NGO's here are subjected to tax regulations which require a SSN to set up.

I think your work is very interesting and I would suggest that you continue your work via the internet and let your base be India. At a future date you may also consider coming to the US on a Business Visa.

Dear Subroto, I agree with Rohit in that you would need to be eligible for work in the Unitd States in order to raise money for your organization under your name, but if there's a group of you then have someone else in the group set it up and set up accounts under the NGO.  You can act as a volunteer and lobby, organize, consult, blog and do almost anything else not involving money.  But you could easily register the organization in India (there are over 1 million NGOs in India now).
