Q. How do I change the name of my business?
I registered my business and applied for an EIN about a year ago. I need to change the name of my business, but hopefully keep the same Tax number. Can someone tell me which steps I should take, and in what order?
Thanks!

I am in california and this answer may need to be adjusted for your state. You may need to file a ficticious name certificate if your proposed name is not specific to you. Blanchard advertising for example uses your name and you should be able to use it on the bsuiness license. if you want to use a name that is "fictcious" to you- Jones advertising for example then there is a process to determine if it is in conflict with someone else. That could require posting . Here is link to Oregon dept. http://licenseinfo.oregon.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=license_seng&link_item_id=13898
hope this helps.

EIN numbers are through the IRS and you will should be able to keep the same number, even though you change the business name.

Thanks all for your input. I was able to file my Articles of Amendment to change the name but keep the same EIN. There was a filing fee, which was a bummer, but it did the trick.
