Creating Innovative Solutions in Healthcare Education

“They’re so ingrained in the business world themselves, and they’ve seen firsthand how things work. They’re able to provide me with stories and examples of what they’ve seen work and be highly successful in parallel fields. That gives me great ideas of what’s possible and how to move forward.”

Natasha Latta came to the entrepreneurial world with extensive experience in the nursing field. As a registered nurse, she knew she wanted to positively impact the industry she knows so well.

“Right now, nursing and doctor burnout is skyrocketing, especially with COVID. Our numbers are dropping, people are leaving this field in droves. What we need more than anything is for people to feel celebrated, stress-relieved, and to feel like they have the tools to do their job.”

After sifting through many business ideas, Natasha identified a gap in the healthcare education market. Fusing together science and technology, Natasha began MedEd Games: a venture offering engaging mobile games as an alternative for studying important medical material.

Natasha’s company emerged instinctively, but she wondered how she could best translate her passion into a successful message for potential target audiences in a world overloaded with so much information: “I can send you promotional information, but are you really going to read it?”

With this in mind, Natasha joined MicroMentor. She found the platform easy to navigate and was excited at the prospect of connecting with anyone in the world. Since the site has mentors with a wide range of specialties in many niches, Natasha felt this might be the place she’d find sustainable mentoring.

Fast forward just a couple of months, and Natasha has a team of mentors that have not only supported existing challenges but also helped incentivize unexpected ideas. They’ve walked her through improving her website, optimizing her marketing plan, and applying for funding through competitive grant programs.

Natasha’s mentors helped her see the power in personalizing her marketing message. Though at one time she may have been apprehensive in using her own stories from years in the medical field, she quickly learned that people do want to relate with you.

When Natasha first joined the MicroMentor community, she also thought she’d sell one-off games on platforms like Apple or Android. Her mentors suggested she think more sustainably; what organizations in her field could she collaborate with? Natasha began thinking about who the influencers might be in the industry, opening up new ideas for revenue streams.

Natasha found that the key to a successful mentorship is an exchange of trust, constructive criticism, and affirmation. In fact, when Natasha found out she was chosen as a finalist for a business pitch competition, the first people she contacted were her mentors.

Sarah McRae, one of Natasha’s mentors, shared: “One thing I love about working with Natasha is that she is receptive to advice and comes prepared with engaging replies that show she is really interested in the success of her business.”

Natasha is getting ready to release her first project – an app she hopes to use as an audition to partner with medical organizations to further develop MedEd Games and its offerings. She hopes this is only the beginning. She’d like to one day see metagames as a viable study option in healthcare education and plans to take her business in this direction.

Natasha has big dreams for the future of MedEd Games and sees mentorship as integral to the process: “I hope to have these mentors until they’re ready to move on. I don’t think it’s smart to work without mentors.”
