Getting to first customer is always a big challenge for most startup businesses. You may need to give some samples of your food stuffs away for free to get people interested. This could involve going directly to where the customer resides. If you plan on having a physical retail location, you should consider a location with high pass by traffic that is not close to the existing Supermarkets.

In order to create demand for your products, you will have to do some form of marketing. One way to understand marketing is to break it down into the so-called P’s: https://mailchimp.com/marketing-glossary/marketing-mix-7ps/

The product should be high quality. Have you tested the food product with some people to see what they think? Have you compared your food products to other products in terms of quality? Your pricing should be reasonable and competitive. Make sure your packaging is appealing and conveys quickly the content and value behind the product. This includes a label that is easy to read from a distance and identifies the ingredients involved. Make sure the customer can easily see the product when passing by. This includes a nice-looking display to grab someone’s interest. Obviously, you will need to promote your products. This can include colorful cards, flyers, brochures, as well as online promotion such as Instagram photos of the food products.

Please note that you will have to become a good sales person. At first it will be very difficult, but over time you will build confidence and start to see positive results. You have to learn how to sell in front of other people and provide good, friendly service. Building relationships with customers is critical to having the customer come back.
