Consider the "Golden Rules for Small Business' and the comments at the link below by those who have used them:

  1. Do not promise what you cannot deliver

  2. Do not overextend your resources and get a reputation for poor performance.

  3. Do not tell the customer what he or she wants to hear. Tell them what they need to know. They will respect you for it.

  4. Network constantly on professional sites such as Linked In, Quora, Alignable and others. Use Groups and Q&A features to accumulate an "Expert" rating from peers in your field.

  5. Blog like there is no tomorrow. A blog is quite different than a web site. Provide good, solid information free of charge and use blog searches for synergistic businesses to team with. Teaming is an absolute necessity these days.

  6. Be prepared to provide information, samples and valuable service gratis as a marketing tool. Introduce yourself and then immediately engage the client with your presentation tools available to bring your expertise to whatever topic they are interested in. Let them take you where they want to go with their concerns and their needs. Apply your presentation tools and expertise dynamically on the fly in a sincere manner to those concerns and needs and you will be in demand for follow up business.

  7. Quote and bill what the client can afford and grow with them (in content and resources).

  8. Be dedicated to working yourself out of a job with a specific customer and having your client take over by training. They will remember you and recommend you to 10 others.

  9. Remember growth is a function of persistence and foresight. Know where your market is headed and get their first - then write and speak about your success indirectly by helping others. Demonstrate humility and a satisfaction in helping others succeed. They will find ways to give you credit. There are ways of tooting your horn without making peoples' lights go out.

  10. Word of mouth advertising from pleased clients is a sure ticket to success.

The first step, Mark, is to ask for a diagnosis of the health of your business (What is the level you are at? What are the challenges, threats and opportunities? Normally the needs in a small business are more than the owner can handle and provide a certain answer, so you start and continue on paths that don't take you to the next level. Without a true, objective diagnosis (I recommend you to leave aside the self-diagnosis and do it with an external consultant / Mentor / business coach) of the global situation of your business and your own situation / reality and that is aligned to your goals / purpose is very difficult to move to the next level (for this reason is so stark the reality of the statistics on the failure of SMEs despite the enormous effort and resources that the owners give in their business. After the diagnosis of the current situation and where you want to get to (next level); the second step is to do the strategic plan that will take you there. The third step is to have focus and discipline in the execution of the plan! These are actions of the highest level of business intelligence, then it takes great emotional intelligence to stay focused and with discipline to not get sucked into the whirlwind of the daily dynamics in which business owners live. That is why it is so important to have a Business Coach / Mentor to accompany you in developing this plan, help you with the strategies and keep you focused. Success is about having focus on the goal and discipline in the execution (when you have focus you stop seeing the rest: that's why it is important to start from a true and professional diagnosis). Most business owners are entrepreneurs who have a great capacity to overcome obstacles...the mistake is that (success) it is not about working hard but working with intelligence and indicators KPI´s & OKR´s that allow you (as in sports) to measure every step, every movement if you are moving forward or away from your goal.

I am here to help you and your business to ove up the next level and have a successful business and balanced life. Do not hesitate to ask me!
