I want to start a Service Desk company that focuses on bringing customer service back, while solving problems. Is this a good idea? I am tired of getting treated so poorly from every service desk and customer service person I talk to. I want to change the industry. Can I make a living at this?

Hi Richard

It is a good idea, due to the increasing number of virtual world services, getting a good customer service from live person is becoming a rare thing. If you are specialized/experienced in an industry, I suggest that would be the starting point for your customer service desk.  Please note that, customer service is all about "providing right information, make a sale, solve a problem".  Certainly you can provide a customer service which includes all the above three components or one component.

You must also look into the existing customer service companies, a.k.a your competitors.  Do a research on their business and revenue model, number of competitors in your industry, geography, profit margin,  which will give you an idea whether you can make a living out of it. However, you need to differentiate yourself from your competitors which is the key to make money.  Hope it helps.

All the best

Hi Richard,

Congrats for your idea. Your venture would grow as long as you stay focus on your customers. A service desk is not just a telephone and a PC that you required. Make sure that you have a good team who can do a bit of multitasking, besides good typing speed and listening skills. Don't underestimate the importance of user-friendly CRM applications because this would help you to retrieve your customer's history and it would make you effective. As per my experience, some team members aren't able to work on complicated CRMs. Make sure that you have the right tools for your work.

Good Luck Richard.
