Decide what you’d wish to get out of getting a mentor, and so evaluate who you recognize that may fit the bill. The manager whose thought-provoking questions helped you formulate goals within the past should be a good option if seeking career guidance, whereas turning to a neighbor who operates her own business is also helpful for learning the way to navigate life as an independent contractor. Don’t feel limited to at least one mentor if multiple people can serve different needs.

Examine potential sources. If you aren’t finding “mentor material” among people you recognize, alter into new areas. Professional organizations, alumni associations, and community groups can bring you into contact with an array of individuals who could be more suitable.

Ask. While some connection or introduction may make the method of meeting a mentor easier, it is often worth a try and establishes a bond with someone you're feeling drawn to but don’t know. Whether this person could be a blogger who seems to talk your language or the director of an area nonprofit whose sense of purpose you admire, take an opportunity and reach out.

Keep trying. Lastly, note that finding a decent mentor can take time. Try to not take rejection personally the person you ask is also currently overwhelmed with other personal and professional obligations. Explore different options until the correct match occurs; the freelancer who finds a superb mentor is that the freelancer who doesn’t give up!
