Since you have no experience in running a burger type business, you should start on a very small scale and work your way up slowly. This might involve a small cart with a grill. The reason you want to start on a small scale is the fact that you must gain the knowledge and experience on how to cook, take orders and service customers. You will make a lot of mistakes when starting out and you do not want to risk too much too soon before you are ready for a real burger type place. If possible, I would encourage you to visit and try and talk to others who started a similar type business in a different location. They can teach you some of the lessons learned that you must deal with when starting out. For example, how to use short hand when filling out an order ticket since you must move quickly when someone places an order.

You should also put some real thought into what your menu should look like – what food items should you offer. Most hamburger establishments offer additional items such as soft drinks and french fries. Little things can also make a difference – providing customers with disposal napkins, a place to sit, easy to order menu, fast service, reasonable prices and daily attention to keeping a very clean place. A good name and slogan for the business can also help.

Perhaps the most important thing to consider is the location. Finding a good location which pulls in customers is very critical to any food service type business. At the same time, you do not want a location where there are other burger restaurants. Your profile implies that you selected a location near your home, but you are not sure if you can attract customers. Make sure you have this nailed down correctly. Location is one of the most critical factors of success to a food establishment. In conclusion, good food, good service, reasonable pricing, a clean place and the right location are some of the basic things that you will need for a successful burger place.

The food industry is very competitive so you need to be strategic in the following areas: - Location selection (perhaps start with a mobile food truck to gauge neighborhoods) - Digital strategy (how will you advertise and attract customers, build brand, etc.) - Differentiation (how will you differentiate your food from a product quality perspective) - Customer experience (end to end, this is extremely important, and takes creativity and dedication) - Pricing strategy (are you targeting the value or the high end segment) - Community engagement and partnerships (to help build out your brand)
