A MENTOR'S ADVICE TO NEW WANT-TO-BE MENTEES

A BIT OF COMMON COURTESY - PLEASE! Mentors take time to read your profile, check what type of help you need, then they sit down and write you an email letter and describe what services they can help you with.... I, personally, feel it is rude what a want-to-be mentored person fails to respond to a prospective mentor! You don't feel that, perhaps, we are a good "fit"... NO PROBLEM.. just say so! But why should I donate my time and go through the trouble of contacting YOU... and YOU fail to respond to my offer of assistance? Secondly, MENTORS are not here to finance your "business"... period! So please don't ask or expect funds from your mentor! As most mentors are working at "long distance" it is often difficult to assist with business financing... IF it is available in your country! Third... The MORE information you can provide a prospective mentor, the better the mentor will be able to help you. When the mentor asks questions, those questions are to HELP YOU....not steal your ideas or copy what you are trying to do... but simply gain the knowledge to offer you usable information. Next, PROMPTLY respond to your mentors email... even if it is "I am backed up with work... I will have to answer this as soon as I am free - by next ????" This lets us know you at least received the email! Thank you Alan B. Cranford

Gracias Alan B. Cranford

Alan, In the 8 years I have been with Micro Mentor, I have encountered each of the conditions of which you speak; perceived lack of responsiveness, apparent lack of consideration, inattentiveness, and others. As a contrast, I have encountered equal conditions diametrically opposed to what you have cited, with mentees entirely responsive to questions, eagerly absorbing advice, putting their own spin on it and playing it back to me in very creative ways, recommending me on many occasions and communicating in cultural ways that are educational and entertaining. Even in the briefest or most inconsiderate encounters I have learned something that has made me a better adviser. It is the Mentees choice to continue. I know little of their personal lives, difficulties, challenges and conflicting priorities. I do not seek to know those details, only offer assistance. Their response is key to a continuing relationship. I do not chase mentees nor do do I critique their attitude toward me. Some contact me once and I never hear from them again. I accept that as their choice. Others have been with me for 5 years or more and contact me only when they have major decisions to make or wish to thank me for my assistance. This is the nature of our volunteer work and I enjoy it very much. In my view the mentor must have an appreciation of the rainbow of human values that exist out there and the fact that good communication must relate on an open minded basis to that phenomena
